This section looks after furniture made from both domestic and exotic wood varieties. Particularly notable furniture pieces are inlaid with metal sheets and exotic materials such as tortoiseshell, mother-of-pearl and ivory. To identify the wood species and investigate paint layers, tiny samples of material are examined under the microscope. Analysis of manufacturing techniques also helps with attributions or other aspects of identification. Collection items such as wall-mounted interior fittings and musical instruments, also fall under this section’s responsibility.
