Description
The globes of the Venetian scholar Vincenzo Coronelli were famous for their magnificent imagery and were also known to document the latest geographical discoveries. At the time, they were the largest globes produced in series and were usually ordered to furnish princely libraries. Elector Max Emanuel of Bavaria acquired the terrestrial globe together with a celestial globe in Brussels in 1696. The elector later had allegories painted over on the southern hemisphere with a portrait of himself and a homage to his person. Particularly delightful are the countless details such as the wild animals of Africa, the various ships at sea and buildings such as the Great Wall of China.
