Description

This goblet is one of the largest and most virtuosic pieces of Baroque ivory turning and illustrates the high standards of the Electoral Collection in Düsseldorf. Georg Steiner, who created the goblet, was the court-turner and had already taught Johann Wilhelm at the lathe when he still was electoral prince. Above the multiple-profiled foot of the goblet rises the spirally wound shaft, which supports the askewly turned goblet. On the lid is another spiral crowned by a filled polyhedron. The opposing, asymmetrical forms make for a carefully balanced, harmonious whole.
