Description
In 1885, King Ludwig II of Bavaria commissioned a "Byzantine" prayer book for the planned bedroom at Falkenstein Castle. The monarch entrusted the miniaturist Hans Fleschütz with this task. The artist based this sheet on the richly enamelled cover of the Pericopes Book of Emperor Henry II, created around the year 1000.
Due to Ludwig's tragic death on 13 June 1886, neither castle nor prayer book were completed. Only four large-format parchment sheets in their original wooden frames have been preserved. The drafts were presented to the king in these frames for his approval.
