Description
From the late 18th century onwards, the Rhön region began producing small wooden figures with clothing made of papier-mâché. A special feature of these figures is a mechanism in their necks that allows the figure to nod its head and open its mouth once it is moved. The crockery monger wearing traditional costume is just one of numerous representations of the variety of professions and of the different social classes that enjoyed great popularity as showpieces in bourgeois circles in the 19th century. The richness of detail of this figure is remarkable, and its range of ceramics includes bowls, jugs and plates.
