Description
Along with household utensils and bedding, painted furniture remained a key item in a bride's dowry well into the 20th century. A basic feature for distinguishing the origin of 18th or 19th century painted furniture is the depiction of people. In Protestant regions, such as the region around Nuremberg where this cabinet comes from, furniture was usually decorated only with geometric ornaments or adorned with plant and animal motifs, especially birds. The colour blue was believed to repel insects, which is why many cabinets were not only painted blue on the outside but also on the inside.
