Description
The tapestry depicts a scene from the Acts of the Apostles: On the riverbank outside the city of Philippi, St Paul is speaking to the attentively listening women. Pieter Coecke van Aelst, at the time, one of the most famous Flemish artists provided an artistically impressive cartoon for the manufactory. But it is only directly in front of this enormous tapestry that one recognises the outstanding mastery of the tapestry weavers, who used a wide variety of techniques to create a textile work of art from the painted design. With nine tapestries, the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum today possesses the only complete series of the Paulus-tapestries based on this design. With its lavish use of precious gold threads, it is also the most richly decorated.
