Description
David Roentgen was the most famous German cabinetmaker of the 18th century. His Neuwied furniture factory supplied all European courts between Paris, Berlin and St Petersburg. Roentgen even opened a show-room in the highly competitive environment of the French capital. His classicist furniture was greatly admired for its sophisticated mechanical features and ornate marquetry designs composed of precious wood veneers. The front of this commode exhibits a scene from the Commedia dell'Arte with spectators in theatre boxes on the left and right door. On the side panels, musicians are depicted rehearsing.
