Description
The oil sketch depicts the physical assumption of Mary into heaven, one of the most common religious themes of the Baroque period. Johann Christian Thomas Wink submitted this Assumption of the Virgin for the painterly redecoration of Munich' Bürgersaal Church. He confidently signed his work as "Bavarian Court Painter", which he had been since 1769. Title and skill, however, were of no avail. The commission went to his competitor Martin Knoller from Tyrol. Wink's design for the ceiling painting was never realised.
