Description
This monumental showpiece cabinet with two writing compartments with fold-down desk tops on each side, revolving tabernacle with drawers in the middle and a top piece with clock was created together with a counterpart in contrasting colours for one of Elector Max Emanuel's palaces. The multi-coloured marquetry of this furniture consists of thin ornaments sawn out of brass and coloured tortoiseshell, stemming from a sea turtle that is strictly protected today. This characteristic surface design is the Bavarian adaptation of a luxurious furniture fashion typical of the court of Louis XIV known as the Boulle technique, named after the ebonist André-Charles Boulle.
