Description
The cult around the Bavarian King Ludwig II began soon after his tragic death in 1886. The posthumous bust depicts the visionary 'fairy tale king' gazing into the distance in the regalia of the Grand Master of the Order of St George. The model for the bust was made by Johann Nepomuk Hautmann; the porcelain manufacturer has yet to be ascertained. The Munich artist became known for his sculptures at the parks of Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee palaces, and over time executed several busts of the monarch. The closest to the king´s portrayal in this bust is the larger-than-life marble bust which was executed for the King Ludwig Monument in Murnau in 1894, portraying the monarch in a general's uniform.
