Description
Ludwig von Schwanthaler became the leading sculptor at the court of King Ludwig I. His most famous work is the colossal statue of Bavaria at the Theresienwiese in Munich. His real preference, however, was for a legendary German fairy-tale world of knights and nymphs. Stemming from this theme are a few life-size marble sculptures Schwanthaler produced for private patrons in the final years of his life between 1841 and 1848. His 'Contemplating Nymph' was the first of this series and is considered to be the most beautiful and most famous of a number of versions he made of this figure.
