Description
These radiantly coloured and microscopically executed enamel paintings, are among the most precious works of art in Elector Johann Wilhelm's Düsseldorf collection. Employed at his court was the Swedish artist, Charles Boit, one of the best and most sought-after miniaturists of his time. These two portrait medallions follow large-format portraits by the Düsseldorf court painter Jan Frans van Douven. In the process of enamel painting, white enamel is first fused onto a copper plate. The artist then paints and dabs different coloured glass fluxes with absolute precision, which are then fired on. The two enamel portraits are part of a collection comprising a large number of family members.
