Description
Votive offerings are symbolic gifts of gratitude. They are offered in places of worship, usually in pilgrimage chapels, on the basis of a vow to a heavenly power or a specific saint. Still today, votive offerings continue to be very common in Catholic regions. These offerings were generally dedicated to a saint after overcoming a crisis or for being miraculously rescued. In the 19th century, eye diseases were still among the most mysterious illnesses. Those affected were aware that no kind of medical treatment could help them recover, which is why they sought assistance through divine invocation.
