The Bayerisches Nationalmuseum focuses largely on works from the Middle Ages to Historicism. Visitors come to discover the major works of Bavarian and, in particular, Munich painters from the 14th to 16th centuries. Outstanding portraits of the Wittelsbach rulers are prominently exhibited.
In addition, magnificent examples of miniature and enamel painting are on display.
A further highlight of the permanent exhibition are oil sketches made for altarpieces and ceiling frescoes from the 18th century.
