Dominance even in the Baroque era.
China had been a dreamland for Europeans ever since the first reports about it were circulated by Marco Polo and his travels along the Silk Road. Later, more and more exquisite and legendary goods arrived in the European ports via the newly discovered shipping routes. Porcelain, lacquer, silk and tea were highly sought-after and expensive – partly because China heavily regulated trade and hardly any Europeans were allowed to set foot on the mainland.
