The Unloved

Elector Karl Theodor in Munich

Upon the death of the last Wittelsbach of the Bavarian line at the end of 1777, Karl Theodor of the Palatinate (1724 – 1799) became Elector of Bavaria. He subsequently transferred the administration of his newly unified realm, Palatinate-Bavaria, to Munich. In the years that followed, he made significant contributions to the economic modernisation of his newly acquired territory, introduced social improvements, and enriched cultural life through initiatives such as the creation of the English Garden and the public opening of his private art collections. Despite these efforts, certain policies alienated him from the sympathies of his Bavarian subjects.

In honour of the 300th anniversary of his birth, this intimate exhibition presents a selection of exceptional artefacts, such as instruments from his court chapel, a linen shirt presented to him as a formal gift, and his walking canes. These items illuminate his two-decade rule in Munich prompting reflection on whether the disapproval he faced was justified. A newly discovered childhood portrait further depicts the jubilarian as an enchanting young prince.
